Jeremy Renner recently revealed why he won’t return as Clint Barton in Hawkeye Season 2. The actor opened up about turning down the offer due to a reduced salary. He also seemed to suggest that the alleged lower salary was because of his 2023 snowplow accident. However, according to a new rumor, the second installment will reportedly move forward with Hailee Steinfeld in the lead role.
Why Hawkeye Season 2 could happen without Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton
Jeremy Renner turned down the offer to return for Hawkeye Season 2 after Disney offered him half of his original salary.
In an interview with High Performance, Renner said, “They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time.’” He also linked the reduced offer to his 2023 snowplow accident, asking, “Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over?”
Renner clarified the offer didn’t come from Marvel Studios directly, stating, “This is not Marvel, mind you. This is like, just Disney, not even really Disney. It’s just the penny pinchers, the accountants. I told them to go fly a kite.” While he declined the role, he said he still loves the character and hasn’t ruled out a future return.
Despite Renner’s decision, insider MyTimeToShineHello reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Hawkeye Season 2 is still in development with Hailee Steinfeld set to lead. The post read, “Despite Jeremy Renner’s decision to not do it, a season 2 of Hawkeye is still moving forward with Hailee Steinfeld as the lead.”
Season 1 established Kate Bishop as Clint Barton’s successor and featured training scenes that positioned her to take over the Hawkeye mantle. Additional deleted scenes like “Kate’s First Day at Work” and “Boomerang” further developed her character.
Hawkeye Season 1 is currently available to stream on Disney+. Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed the second season.
