It doesn’t look like Andor series creator Tony Gilroy has any plans to head back to a galaxy far, far away following the release of the Star Wars show’s second season.
Tony Gilroy has left his mark on the Star Wars galaxy
Until joining Star Wars, Gilroy was best known for providing the screenplay for Universal’s Bourne movies — The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). He also wrote and directed the 2012 spin-off, The Bourne Legacy. In 2016, he was hired by Lucasfilm to provide rewrites on the company’s first live-action Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as direct reshoots. His rewrites proved so crucial to the 2016 movie that he ended up being credited for his work.
Similar to Rogue One, Gilroy was brought on to Andor after development had already begun, replacing Stephen Schiff in 2020 as showrunner and head writer. Andor is a prequel to Rogue One, revealing how Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor became a rebel spy in the five years preceding the events of the 2016 movie.
With both Rogue One and Andor receiving positive reviews from critics and fans, Collider asked Gilroy if he had any intention of creating another project for Star Wars. “It’s not really part of my plan. I’ve been peripherally involved for 10 years and intensely involved for six years, so that’s a pretty big chunk of my life,” he explained. “There are other things to do. I think when it’s done, I will have left a pretty big piece of Star Wars real estate behind. I’m feeling guilty about not chipping in.”

Gilroy then shared that what he wants to do after his time in the Star Wars universe is over is direct a movie about movie music. “I’d like to direct before I forget how. So, I have a movie I’m trying to get off. We’ll see if I get the money for it. I’m in a whole other world again. I’m back out there with my hat in my hand, trying to raise money,” he stated.
The second and final season of Andor will premiere on Disney+ on April 22, 2025. The 12-episode season will be released in four batches of 3 episodes, with each spanning one year.
