The early press regarding the new Amazing Spider-Man series teased many classic villains getting a power upgrade. Mention was also made of a new villain who would challenge Peter Parker in both his lives. Now the villain’s name and design have been revealed, yet little else is known about the mysterious Hellgate.

Designed by John Romita Jr., Hellgate first appeared in a flash-forward sequence in Amazing Spider-Man #65. His costume resembles a Roman centurion, with heavy armor and a distinctive helm that conceals his face. However, there is a darkness beyond his archaic appearance, and his brief cameo suggests he will strike at the Spider Society.

Hellgate a new mystery for Amazing Spider-Man

Marvel Comics is remaining tight-lipped regarding details involving Hellgate beyond the visual. The villain is said to have a singular purpose in trying to humiliate Peter Parker before destroying him. However, the origin, identity and mission of Hellgate have yet to be defined. Nor have his powers beyond “formidable strength” been revealed. Reportedly, the mystery of Hellgate will inform the first year of the new Amazing Spider-Man series.

“I’m fascinated by the internal lives of these characters and exploring new territory there,” notes writer Joe Kelly explained in an interview with Polygon. “Peter’s youth is interesting, for example, the days before he was “puny Parker” in high school. At the same time, I feel a drive to take bold, unexpected swings in order to see how Spider-Man deals with Marvel-sized curve balls.”
It would seem that the mystery behind Hellgate is one of the curveballs Kelly has in store for the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler and his amazing friends in 2025.
Amazing Spider-Man #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on April 9, 2025.
