Hawkeye Villain Talks About His Return To Marvel

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the final two episodes of Hawkeye!

The big man is back in the MCU. Hawkeye episodes 5 and 6 formally reintroduced Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin. D’Onofrio originally portrayed Fisk in three seasons of Daredevil on Netflix. And while the debate rages on about whether Daredevil is canon in the MCU, D’Onofrio’s new interview with EW suggests that Hawkeye‘s Kingpin is the same man he portrayed before. D’Onofrio also suggested that the Blip greatly diminished Kingpin’s power.

“Once I reconnected to the way I played him [on Daredevil], what the events in his life were, and attached myself to the emotional aspects of the character, then it was fine, I was good to go,” said D’Onofrio. “I know that we were picking up with the same guy. It’s tough to connect all the dots, but they connected as many as they could and that he had lost a bit of his power because of the Blip. But the idea [was] to bring him into Hawkeye, to have him be that same character that he was in the earlier show, and play him like that.”

D’Onofrio also noted that Kingpin’s Hawaiian shirt was a direct callback to the comics.

“I believe that the Hawaiian shirt, white suit, and hat is from the Family Business comic,” noted D’Onofrio. “It’s actually my screensaver on my computer, and it has been since I started doing Daredevil years ago. So I think it came from that, [and] the aspect of the collaboration with the incredible costume people there… So yeah, I have input and it’s like a collaborative effort. It’s really fun being creative with the Marvel team. They’re also smart and everybody is sort of on the same page. They want everything to be great. So it’s just working towards that.”

Additionally, D’Onofrio declined to state whether Kingpin survived getting shot by his niece, Maya Lopez. In the comics, that was just another chapter in Fisk’s life. The upcoming Echo series is the most likely place Fisk could reappear. And D’Onofrio remains open to continuing Kingpin’s story.

“That would be great,” related D’Onofrio. “That’s what I want, and I think that’s what the fans want too. For me to say whether that’s going to happen or not, it’s impossible to know for sure. I appreciate the warm welcome from all the fans and everybody out there that have been kind of on social media about wanting me back and now having me back. It’s just a great thing. Just so they all know, my hope is that we continue. We’re just going to have to see what happens. I keep thinking about Daredevil having ended and having to walk away from that. So that’s on my mind too. Maybe it is all over. But I can only hope it’s not.”
