Star Trek: Picard Was Originally Supposed to Be a One-Shot

One of the best things to happen to the Star Trek Universe in the last couple of years was greenlit after the producers had a sudden change of heart. The recent Star Trek: Picard series subsequently met with both critics’ and fans’ approval. But according to Picard producer Akiva Goldsman, they originally only intended to have the captain cameo in one of the shorts in the anthology originating as a companion series to the Discovery series. From that, it evolved into the series we all know.

“Picard wasn’t supposed to be a series,” he revealed while talking with THR. “It was just a one-off scene in a Short Trek. He wasn’t even going to be played by Patrick Stewart. They were going to have a young Picard at the end of a short we were making up. Then [executive producer] Alex [Kurtzman] was like, “What if it was Patrick Stewart? … What if it wasn’t one scene?” Alex has a plan, and it’s pretty cool.”

The sophomore season will see the return of John de Lancie’s Q, who will reunite with Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard once again. In the same interview, Goldsman also tackled how they will deal with the mighty character’s evolution without making him looking cartoonish.

“Terry Matalas and I don’t pretend that the interstitial years didn’t happen,” he added. “No, obviously, chronological time is less relevant to Q. The time between shows is probably not even the blink of an eye in Q time — if you even have Q time. But we definitely chose to follow suit when it came to him. So as we tried to evolve the other characters, the same is true of Q. This is a show of a different time with actors of a different age. We’re now talking about the issues that come up in the last [stage] of your life. We wanted a Q that could play in that arena with Picard.”

Star Trek: Picard season 2 will premiere on Paramount+ in 2022.
