Free Guy Trailer Tease Hedges Its Release Date Bets

Trailers for trailers are usually tacky, too-brief highlight reels that feel like a way for studios to double dip. But in the spirit of Free Guy, a movie about a computer program not doing what it’s supposed to, the latest tease also misbehaves. Supposed to hype up a full Free Guy trailer coming tomorrow, it instead takes a detour into debating the proposed opening date. Because even though the film has the goal of a December release, COVID-19 and movie theater closure rules could easily force other plans. And Ryan Reynolds came prepared for that. Maybe.

What promises to initially show footage instead goes to a Zoom call. One with Reynolds, director Shawn Levy, and costars Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudka, as they prepare voice-overs for all potential future postponements. Because really, the odds that any big studio releases will open theatrically for the rest of the year seem quite slim.

When it ultimately does show up, Free Guy, per the initial synopsis, will tell the following story. “A bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.” (They can’t legally say he’s an NPC in Grand Theft Auto, but that’s basically the gist.)

Expect more actual movie footage tomorrow morning. Will you be excited to see it? Tell us in comments.
