Venom 2 Cinematographer Hints At Carnage’s Entrance

Andy Serkis is set to take the helm of Venom 2, and Tom Hardy is making his return as Eddie Brock/Venom. Cinematographer Robert Richardson will also join the crew, after collaborating with Serkis in his feature debut, Breathe. He’s happy about the project, which will serve as his first official superhero film. Richardson recently spoke to Collider about what to expect from Venom 2; and teased the introduction of Carnage.

“I think it’s unexplored yet, and it’s going to explode, and this film, I think, will help it explode, because you have a remarkable central character with Venom, but now you’ve got Woody Harrelson, who’s going to obviously make his own little entrance here, and we’ll see what else comes in with the Sony Marvel collaboration,” he explained. “I look forward to it. It’s a massive change for me, but I’m excited. I think Hardy is one of our best. He never misses. I so look forward to sitting with him and watching him perform.”

Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady/Carnage made his debut in Venom‘s post-credits scene. was shown during the conclusion of the first film. Based on Richardson’s comments, he’ll play a bigger part the second time around. He was always the obvious choice for the next villain.

Richardson also touched upon his involvement with The Batman back when Ben Affleck was still slated to write, direct, and star in it.

“I was looking forward to entering into that arena with Batman years ago with Ben [Affleck],” said Richardson. “I thought, ‘Well this is something I haven’t done that I would love to try to do.’ And then Andy Serkis, who I worked with on Breathe, gave me a call a month ago and said that he was up for this and would I be willing. I’d seen the film. I watched it again, then they sent me a script and I felt like, yeah, I would say yes anyway to Andy just because I would say yes to Andy, but I also think it’s a great…”

More of the interview can be found here, including how Richardson plans to adapt to a different style than what cinematographer Matthew Libatique brought to the original Venom.

Venom 2 doesn’t currently have a release date. Robertson’s latest film is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood; which is in theaters now.
