Wonder Woman Lassos $38.8 Million on Friday

Warner Bros. Pictures and DC FilmsWonder Woman earned a stellar $38.8 million on Friday, including $11 million from Thursday previews. The film is now playing in 4,165 theaters and has received an A CinemaScore from audiences. $3.7 million of the Friday total came from 341 IMAX theaters. The film is now expected to bring in over $95 million its first weekend.

Wonder Woman is also dominating the 55 international markets its playing in, grossing an estimated $28 million on Friday from 34,335 screens. The overseas total is now $47.1 million and worldwide total is at $85.9 million. China alone brought in $11.7 million from 16,000 screens.

The Patty Jenkins-directed film stars Gal Gadot (The Fast and the Furious films, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Robin Wright (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Netflix‘s House of Cards), Danny Huston (Clash of the Titans, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Ewen Bremner (Exodus: Gods and Kings, Snowpiercer), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Connie Nielsen (GladiatorNymphomaniac: Vol. I) and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead).

The other wide release, DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, grossed $8 million from 3,434 theaters on Friday and is expected to earn about $24.8 million for the weekend.

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, meanwhile, dropped 74% in tickets sales from last Friday with $6.3 million.
