Captain America: Civil War Opens to $200.2 Million Overseas

The Walt Disney Studios dominated the worldwide box office this weekend with The Jungle Book easily holding onto the top spot in North America and Captain America: Civil War opening big internationally.

Captain America: Civil War has launched internationally to an estimated $200.2 million from 37 territories (63% of the international marketplace), playing narrowly behind Avengers: Age of Ultron (about 5% behind) and setting multiple records, including all-time industry opening weekends in Brazil, Mexico and the Philippines. Strong international grosses are expected for tomorrow as well due to the May Day holiday on Monday in many markets. In addition to the North American release, next weekend sees openings in all the remaining international markets, including Italy (May 4), Russia (May 5), Argentina (May 5) and China (May 6), as well as Croatia, Czech Rep, Greece, Hungary, Lebanon, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey, New Zealand, India, Trinidad and Uruguay.

The Russo Brothers-directed film blew away expectations by delivering an epic $9.6 million on 205 overseas IMAX screens, or a heroic $47K per screen – nearly double the IMAX per screen average of Captain America: Winter Soldier‘s $25K for its early international weekend. Next week, another 750 IMAX screens will open Captain America: Civil War with the North American launch as well as more overseas territories, including the all-important China market.
