The Pokémon Company has unveiled the official teaser trailer for its brand-new animated feature film, Pokémon: Wild Card. The upcoming movie marks the franchise’s long-awaited return to the big screen.
Pokémon: Wild Card is slated for a 2027 release window worldwide. Produced by acclaimed Japanese animation studio CloverWorks, the original film is based on Satoshi Tajiri’s iconic franchise.
Directed by Katsuhiko Kitada with character designs by Akemi Hayashi, Wild Card serves as the twenty-fourth animated film in the Pokémon franchise. The project was officially announced during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco.
Wild Card is based on the ongoing Pokémon Trading Card Game series. The movie follows a trading card game player and his mysterious partner Pokémon, Mimikyu.

What is shown in Pokémon: Wild Card’s trailer?
The short teaser introduces Mikiya, a young Pokémon TCG player sporting a yellow hooded jacket styled after Mimikyu. Mikiya wears a blank yet determined expression as he reaches out to play a card across a TCG table before the camera dramatically transitions to reveal the movie’s official title card.
The teaser also features a look at his partner Mimikyu, the Ghost/Fairy-type Pokémon that conceals its true form beneath a crude rag costume modeled after Pikachu. Introduced in Generation 7’s Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, the fan-favorite creature takes center stage in a story exploring the bonds formed through tabletop competition.
Pokémon: Wild Card is the first movie in the franchise since the 2020 film Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. This film premiered on Netflix worldwide in 2021 following its theatrical release in Japan.
Meanwhile, Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us was the last Pokémon movie to release in theaters worldwide in 2018. It received a limited release outside of Japan by Fathom Events.
Alongside Pokémon: Wild Card, 2027 will also see the franchise expand with the release of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves as part of the 10th generation of the Pokémon video game series.
