Newly revealed concept art from Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows a more terrifying, brutal version of Hulk than what the audience saw on the big screen. Marvel concept artist shared the artwork on Instagram, unveiling early ideas for how the character could have looked in the recent MCU film.
The artwork shows Hulk with a much rougher appearance and a more aggressive expression. His torn clothing and imposing physique make him look closer to the character’s classic Savage Hulk persona.
Burt also shared that early story beats called for Smart Hulk to revert to Savage Hulk. The artist also explored the possibility of a grey Hulk version and a face more reminiscent of his comic book counterpart. One image shows Smart Hulk (a merged version of Bruce Banner and the Hulk) wearing glasses and a sweater.
The art also shows the Green Goliath shrinking back into Bruce Banner, left wearing oversized clothes before growing larger than ever.
Hulk’s role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day explained
Brand New Day introduces Bruce Banner teaching at a University, putting on a wrist inhibitor to stay in human form and keep Smart Hulk suppressed.
After Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) undergoes significant biological changes, he approaches Banner for help, disguising himself as his student. He wants to know about the inhibitor device that can help control unexpected mutations in spider DNA.
However, chaos emerges when Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) destroys Banner’s inhibitor, which unleashes the aggressive Hulk seen in earlier MCU movies. That triggers a massive action sequence between him, Spider-Man, and The Punisher.
During the fight, Peter ultimately stops the rampage by reminding the green beast of their personal connection, by passing Doctor Strange‘s memory spell. After turning into Banner again, he is taken away by medical authorities, with no memory of what happened.
Burt’s concept art perfectly captures the terrifying intensity of his uninhibited rage even without grey skin.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day grossed more than $2.3 billion to date, according to The Numbers.
