A prominent book translator has slammed Christopher Nolan‘s latest directorial, The Odyssey, calling it “abysmal.” The latest epic action fantasy from the Academy Award winner has impressed many movie lovers, but it seems not everyone is mesmerized.
Emily Wilson, whose 2017 translation of Homer’s iconic poem, Odyssey, was admired by Nolan during early publicity for The Odyssey, has criticized his live-action adaptation. Wilson wrote, “Nolan’s Odyssey lacks many of the elements that make the poem great. It has nothing convincing to say about time, memory, history, war,” in her essay for the London Review of Books, according to The Guardian.
Focusing on the movie’s writing, she wrote, “It lacks psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth. Its narrative structure is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal. None of the characters has convincing motivation for their actions or words.” Wilson even mentioned, “I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.”

Apart from Emily Wilson’s backlash, The Odyssey has faced various other problematic moments since its theatrical debut this month.
After Nolan’s action/fantasy made its way on the big screen, Elon Musk took to X and called out the movie for not being historically accurate.
In fact, the SpaceX CEO revealed that he would like to come up with his own version of Homer’s Odyssey, which will be more true to the source material. However, he wants to do it using AI, through the Grok Imagine feature.
On X, Musk shared a post while revealing a proof-of-concept video, made by the Grok Imagine AI feature, to showcase his vision for a live-action Odyssey movie. He wrote, “Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer”
However, the billionaire’s AI vision for making the Odyssey movie soon attracted heavy backlash and trolling from fans.
As for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, it’s now playing in theaters.
