Todd McFarlane has spent decades expanding the Spawn universe. He has done it through comics, animation, toys, and upcoming projects. While we are all waiting for the long-discussed live-action reboot of the Spawn franchise, the creator unexpectedly revealed a major project.
The movie, featuring the voices of Mark Hamill and Keith David, was nearly finished years ago. Despite that, the movie has yet to reach audiences. Speaking in a recent interview at SDCC, McFarlane finally explained what happened to the mysterious animated film and why it was shelved. He also said that the film already has its voice cast fully recorded, making it closer to completion than many fans expected.
Todd McFarlane Reveals the Fate of the Unreleased Animated Spawn Movie
During a recent interview with Comic Book, McFarlane was asked about the possibility of creating a sequel to the original Spawn movie or Spawn animated series. He explained that he already has an unreleased Spawn movie waiting for the right time to debut, which went on hold after a dispute with the production team.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever said, we developed, we were in the process of developing the return of this Spawn animation a while back, and then we, I got in a fight at the very end with the production and the lawyer, so I just bought it all back,” McFarlane said.
The creator also said the movie, with a runtime of 90 minutes, is almost done. He explained, “I actually have a 90-minute animated show that’s all been drawn, minus the cells. All the voices have been done. Everything. All we need is a little bit of Foley, which is sound effects and stuff, and then hand it to a studio to actually draw.”
As for the cast, Hamill voices Detective Twitch in the film, while David reprises his iconic role as Spawn. Referring to Hamill’s recording session, McFarlane said, “I didn’t hire you for a cute voice. I hired you, Mark Hamill, to act this voice.” After Hamill replied, “So I just talk like me. That’s it,” McFarlane added, “He nailed it after that.”
McFarlane praised David’s return as Spawn and said he still hears David whenever he reads a Spawn comic. “He’s Kevin Conroy to Batman. When I read Spawn, now I hear Keith’s voice,” he said.
As of now, the project remains unreleased. However, the creator made it clear that the project is ready whenever he decides the time is right.
