It has been almost 40 years since Masters of the Universe saw a live-action feature-length adaptation. This has created an aura of anticipation around the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios movie. However, the He-Man franchise has continued to develop fans through action figures, animated series, and comics. To that end, Dark Horse Comics has announced a prequel comic set in the reality of the new film.
There have been several incarnations of Masters of the Universe over the years. Most center around the planet Eternia and the battle for the mystic secrets of Castle Grayskull. On the side of good is the champion He-Man, who is secretly Adam, Prince of Eternia. Leading the forces of evil is the sinister sorcerer Skeletor.
The new Masters of the Universe movie puts a twist on the classic formula, with a young Prince Adam being sent to Earth from Eternia. It is here he grows to manhood and seeks the Sword of Power that is his destiny. In the grand Arthurian tradition, he returns to Eternia to defend his homeland as He-Man.
Master of the Universe: The Wings of Fate Explained
The prequel comic, Masters of the Universe: The Wings of Fate, seems to be set in the time between when Adam leaves Eternia and when he returns. In the aftermath of Skeletor’s siege on Eternos, a down-and-out refugee gives aid to an injured falcon. To save her, he must embark upon a perilous journey through the Mystic Mountains to the realm of Avion.
The series is written by Tim Sheridan, who also wrote for the Masters of the Universe: Revolution cartoon. It will be illustrated by Will Sliney, most famous for the Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren comic. The series also enjoys color art by Israel Silva and letters by AndWorld Design.
