According to a new rumor, a major MCU villain will no longer be showing up in Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is currently in post-production. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, the movie is currently scheduled to release later this year. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, is then expected to follow in 2027.
So far, Marvel has released four Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailers. The first trailer revealed that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is returning to the MCU, while the second focused on Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and the third on a handful of X-Men characters. The fourth and final teaser then put the spotlight on Letitia Wright’s Shuri/Black Panther, Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm/The Thing, and more.
Who has reportedly been cut from Avengers: Doomsday?
While there were previously unconfirmed reports and rumors that Thanos, played in the MCU by Josh Brolin, scooper James Mack is now reporting that won’t be the case.
“I’ve heard that there isn’t a Thanos in Avengers Doomsday anymore, at least not anymore,” the post reads.
There’s still the possibility that Thanos could show up in some capacity in Avengers: Secret Wars, as many fans have been expecting Marvel to adapt a certain iconic but spoiler-filled moment that takes place between the legendary villain and God Emperor Doom in the Secret Wars comic. Whether or not that actually happens, though, remains to be seen.
Plot details for Avengers: Doomsday remain under wraps at this time. The cast of the film also includes Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Channing Tatum as Gambit, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and more.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is dated for December 17, 2027.
