Disney reportedly has plans to reboot one of its classic animated movies.
In recent years, Disney has turned a number of their classic animated movies into live-action films. While the live-action Snow White that was released earlier this year wasn’t exactly a box office juggernaut, the Lilo & Stitch retelling that came out in May was a huge hit, as it made over a billion dollars globally and is currently the second-highest-grossing movie of 2025.
What animated movie is Disney reportedly rebooting?
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Disney now has plans to make a movie called Aurora, which will be a reimagining of Sleepy Beauty. The twist is that the film will reportedly be set in Mexico rather than 14th-century Europe.
Further details are not available at this time. This is only a rumor, and should be treated as such, for now, as Disney has not officially announced plans regarding an Aurora movie.
Should this project come to fruition, though, it won’t be the first time that Disney has rebooted Sleeping Beauty. In 2014, the studio released a live-action movie titled Maleficent, which is centered on the villain from the animated film. Angelina Jolie played the titular character, while Ella Fanning starred as Aurora.
Maleficent was followed by a sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which was released in 2019. Jolie and Fanning both reprised their roles in that film, while the cast also includes Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrate, Sam Riley as Diaval, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Conall, Ed Skrein as Borra, and Harris Dickinson as Prince Philip.
A third Maleficent film was announced to be in development in December 2023, though there haven’t been many updates about that project since writer Linda Woolverton told Deadline the project was still in development in March 2025. It’s unclear if Maleficent 3 will still move forward if the Aurora movie ends up happening.
Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil are all available to stream on Disney+ at this time.
