A new rumor regarding Doctor Strange’s role in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars has emerged online.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as The Russo Brothers, the film is scheduled to arrive next year. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, then follows in 2027.
What is the update on Doctor Strange and Avengers: Doomsday?
On a recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast, Jeff Sneider of The InSneider said he’d heard that Doctor Strange, who is played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the MCU, will be on Doctor Doom’s side in the forthcoming Avengers movies.
This is just a rumor at this time, as no official plot details for Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars have been revealed. Cumberbatch’s casting in either Avengers movies has also not been formally announced by Marvel.
Having said that, it would make sense if Avengers: Secret Wars is at least a somewhat accurate adaptation of the Marvel Comics event from writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribić. In that story, Doom uses the power of the Beyonders to create Battleworld after the incursion between Earth-616 and Earth-1610 destroys the multiverse. Thinking that the majority of Earth-616’s heroes died during the incursion, Stephen joins Doom’s team and becomes known as ‘Sheriff Strange,’ which then gives him control over the Thor Corps.
Eventually, after finding some survivors from Earth-616, Strange betrays Doom and is ultimately killed by the villain.
Should Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars really put Strange on Doom’s side, that doesn’t mean this is how things will play out in the movies. As noted by The Hot Mic’s co-host John Rocha, “They’re not going to follow beat-by-beat what happens in the comics. They didn’t do that with Civil War, and they didn’t do that with the Infinity Gauntlet Saga, so I can’t imagine that they would do that.”
Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars then follows on December 17, 2027.
