Avatar 3 Photo Shows First Look at Fire and Ash Villain

A new Avatar 3 photo from 20th Century Studios’ highly anticipated threequel to the 2022 epic blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water has been revealed. This comes ahead of the movie’s upcoming theatrical release on December 19, pitting it directly against The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants at the box office.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will debut in the same month as several high-profile movies such as Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Netflix’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Sony Pictures’ Anaconda, and A24’s Marty Supreme.

Who is in the Avatar 3 photo?

Shared by Empire, the Avatar 3 photo provides fans with a first look at the return of Stephen Lang‘s iconic villain, Quaritch. It shows the franchise antagonist trying to connect with his son, Spider, played by Jack Champion. In an interview with the outlet, Lang confirmed that the upcoming sequel will show more of their characters’ complicated father-son dynamic.

“They reconnect out of necessity,” Lang said. “Their connection is not a solo connection. There are times when everybody comes together on some level. But, when enemies cooperate, you can be sure betrayal is just around the corner.”

He continued, “Spider confuses Quaritch. But Quaritch wants clarity. There is something about Spider that Quaritch really loves — not a word we associate with him. I think respect and admiration really develop in spades, as well as animosity and manipulation. The relationship will deepen — for better or worse.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is once again directed by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The ensemble cast includes returning stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Edie Falco, and more.
