Superman 2 won’t be what audiences expect. This is what James Gunn said when promoting the upcoming release of the first live-action DCU movie. He told Entertainment Weekly when asked if a Superman 2025 sequel was happening, ”What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”
What does that mean? The possibilities are somewhat endless at this point. We haven’t seen Superman yet, and there could be a whole number of different things that the movie sets up for the future of the DCU. We can’t say for sure, at this point, what Superman 2 will look like, but we do have some theories on how it could surprise fans by not being a “straight-up Superman sequel.”
What could the Superman 2025 sequel be about?
World’s Finest
World’s Finest perhaps seems like the most obvious choice. Batman and Superman have a long history of interacting with one another in DC Comics. Zack Snyder showed us what that looks like when they’re at one another’s throats. A movie where the Dark Knight and Man of Steel team up with one another as buddies (for the whole time, not just the third act) seems like a pretty logical direction to take things in. That could also get some movement on the Brave and the Bold movie that Andy Muschietti is working on; if the Superman 2025 sequel is a World’s Finest movie and people are loving Batman in that, Brave and the Bold could quickly become a priority for the DCU.
Justice League
There’s also the chance that Superman 2 could really be a Justice League movie. This first Superman movie introduces a lot of other DC heroes — Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, etc. We all know that a Justice League movie will probably happen, at some point; if future DCU projects continue to introduce a number of fan-favorite characters each time, a Justice League movie could happen sooner rather than later.
Superman & Supergirl
Superman is getting his own solo movie next month, while Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow arrives in 2026. Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav recently said the four main characters of the DCU will be Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl. We don’t know who will play Batman or Wonder Woman, yet, but Milly Alcock’s Supergirl casting has been known for a while — maybe the Superman 2025 sequel will be him fighting alongside Kara? Could be!
The Terrifics
Or, perhaps the next Superman movie won’t even be about Superman at all. The Terrifics is definitely an option, given that Mister Terrific and Metamorpho are both core members of that team in DC Comics. Gunn’s Superman movie could potentially see The Terrifics begin to form. A sequel could then send them into the Dark Multiverse on some sort of mission. They have the opportunity to do something pretty epic with that.
Trinity
Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman are three of the most popular superhero characters in history. We’ve never really had a proper live-action movie focused on just the three of them. We know progress is being made on Wonder Woman, as a new film was just announced. Odds are that they aren’t going to wait too much longer to do something with Batman. Could the Superman 2025 sequel be with all three of them? Don’t count it out.
Superman and the Authority
Then there’s the real possibility that Superman 2 could be an adaptation of Grant Morrison and Mikel Janin’s Superman and the Authority series. The Authority was one of the DCU projects that was initially announced, but it hasn’t had many substantial updates since then; and, yet, The Engineer is going to play a big role in Superman. If they were to combine the long-awaited Authority project with Superman 2, it’d almost be like killing two birds with one stone. Plus, Morrison and Janin’s series is really good; an adaptation of that done right could be a huge hit for Warner Bros.
