Dark Phoenix Director Shares Deadpool & Wolverine Thoughts

Former X-Men producer and Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg has weighed in on the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine at Marvel Studios.

Kinberg was interviewed by ComicBook.com to promote his AppleTV+ series Sugar when he was asked about the mutants’ transition from Fox‘s X-Men universe to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “It’s a good question because it’s outside of actually being inside the process of making anything. The truth is, with the Marvel movies, if I answer anything, I’m just afraid there’s gonna be a sniper’s little red dot on my forehead and my children will be fatherless,” Kinberg said.

He added, “So I’m just gonna say, I’m such a massive fan of everything that Hugh [Jackman]’s done with Wolverine. I think I made five movies he was in, in one form or another, as Wolverine and I’m very excited for the film. I know that for him, and for Ryan [Reynolds] and for Shawn [Levy], exploring some aspects that perhaps we haven’t explored before, I would imagine is appealing.”

Kinberg’s tenure with the X-Men franchise in movies began as the screenwriter of 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. He went on to produce future installments in the X-Men: First Class series as well as 2016’s Deadpool, 2017’s Logan, and 2018’s Deadpool 2. Kinberg was elevated to director status when he helmed 2019’s Dark Phoenix as the final entry with the First Class cast before Marvel acquired the movie license from Fox. Dark Phoenix underperformed critically and commercially at the time of its release.
