Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña recently revealed that DC fans won’t have to wait too long to see him back on the screen as the young superhero.
Speaking with Screen Rant on the red carpet for the 51st Saturn Awards, the actor — who later that night took home the award for Best Younger Actor in a Film — expressed how grateful he was for DC Studios to allow him to continue in the role of Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in the DC Universe.
“I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again, whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever. It’s been really great to work alongside James and Peter, who have graciously folded us into their new universe even though it wasn’t part of what they came up with. It’s an honor,” Maridueña said. “Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon.”
Blue Beetle was one of the last DCEU movies
Released in theaters on August 18, 2023, Blue Beetle was the penultimate installment in the DC Extended Universe, which will be softly rebooted into the DC Universe later this year. Although Blue Beetle underperformed at the box office, grossing only $130 million worldwide, Maridueña’s performance as the titular hero was praised.
Maridueña was officially confirmed as the DCU’s Blue Beetle in June 2023. While the actor will continue in the role, Gunn explained that the Blue Beetle film would not be canon to the DCU, meaning that certain aspects of the title character could be changed ahead of his next appearance.
At this time, it is unknown if any Blue Beetle actors beyond Maridueña will also be reprising their respective roles in the DCU. The ensemble cast for Blue Beetle includes Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord, George Lopez as Rudy Reyes, Adriana Barraza as Nana, Belissa Escobedo as Milagros Reyes, Elpidia Carrillo as Rocio Reyes, Damián Alcázar as Alberto Reyes, Raoul Trujillo as Ignacio Carapax/OMAC, and Harvey Guillén as Dr. Sanchez, with Becky G as the voice of the alien Scarab Khaji-Da.
