Black Adam and Mister Mind.

Shazam! 2 Director on the Absence of Black Adam and Mister Mind

This should go without saying for longtime comic book readers, but casual fans deserve to know too: Black Adam is a Shazam! villain, and he should have stayed that way. For the last two decades, Black Adam has been portrayed as more of an antihero, but he was never kept separate from the hero formerly known as Captain Marvel. Regardless, Black Adam is absent from Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and so is Mister Mind, the talking alien worm who was glimpsed in the mid-credits scene of Shazam! in 2019. During a new interview with Uproxx, director David F. Sandberg addressed leaving Black Adam and Mister Mind out of the sequel, and he made it clear that the former was never a part of the story.

“Because we knew that they were doing a separate Black Adam [movie], we knew that he wasn’t going to be a big part of [Fury of the Gods], said Sandberg. So we got Helen Mirren instead.”

For now, the future of the Shazam! franchise is unclear. But if he can continue with another sequel, Sandberg expressed his eagerness to explore Mister Mind.

“I’d love to see more with Mister Mind, not just because I do the voice for him,” noted Sandberg. “But I mean, he’s just such a unique character because it’s silly in one way because he’s just a little worm. But he is really intelligent and dangerous and he has other forms as well. He can Hyperfly form and things like that in the comics.”

The post-credits scenes from Fury of the Gods were not shown to the media at press screenings. Regardless, Sandberg noted that nothing was changed because of the new DC Studios regime. And those scenes were held back to offer fans a surprise.

“I think it’s more like wanting to save something for the fans on opening day and all that stuff, so it doesn’t all get out there,” said Sandberg. “They’re mostly just fun little scenes. It’s not like, ‘Here’s the new Superman.’ I can’t spoil too much, but you get to see some characters that are fun to see.”

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will hit theaters this Friday, March 17.
