Although its place in DCEU continuity is unclear, Batgirl is one of the most highly-anticipated films on the DC docket. Leslie Grace will headline the movie as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. a young woman who navigates her role as Gotham City’s newest crimefighter alongside Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne/Batman. But as the old saying goes, not all heroes wear capes. J.K. Simmons is also coming back to play Barbara’s father, police commissioner Jim Gordon. And while speaking with Collider, Simmons teased that his character will see a lot more action than he did in Justice League. HBO Max’s Batgirl movie.
During the interview, Simmons reiterated that Batgirl will dive into the father-daughter relationship between Jim and Barbara. We still don’t know if Jim is going to be made aware of Barbara’s double-life by the end of the movie. But we can definitely expect him to do a whole lot more than just stand on the roof of GCPD headquarters and turn on the Bat Signal.
“Batgirl was a treat, for a number of reasons,” said Simmons. “My little bit in Justice League was, at the time, meant to be, ‘Look, we’re gonna introduce this guy and we’re gonna see more of him in the future.’ I didn’t have a whole lot to do. In Batgirl, because of the relationship between Commissioner Gordon and his daughter, it’s much more of a domestic aspect of Jim Gordon. We do get to see some fun, out in the street . . . Well, I’m gonna stop now because I really don’t wanna do any spoilers. But it was fun to do the stuff with Leslie Grace, who plays Batgirl, and get to portray a different aspect of Jim Gordon, other than as Commissioner Gordon.”
Simmons confessed that being invited back to the DC Universe was “extra shocking,” especially after Jeffrey Wright was cast as Gordon in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. But given the growing popularity of the multiverse, he also joked that there might be a story where he and Wright can share the screen with other actors who have brought the character to life.
“Maybe down the road, there will be a movie where Jeffrey Wright and I, and everybody who’s ever played Commissioner Gordon, will show up in a Batman movie,” added Simmons.
Batgirl will premiere on HBO Max sometime this year.
