Michael Keaton Addresses His Return as Batman in The Flash Movie

If DC fans weren’t excited about The Flash movie before, their interest was certainly piqued last summer when it was reported that Michael Keaton was in talks to join the film as Bruce Wayne/Batman, marking the first time he’s played the Dark Knight since Tim Burton’s Batman Returns hit theaters in 1992. Right now, The Flash is gearing up to begin production in the U.K. next month. But even as its start date approaches. it seems like Keaton still hasn’t made up his mind about whether he’ll appear in the movie at all.

Keaton opened up where he stands with The Flash in a recent interview with Deadline. He’s played coy about his role in the film in the past. But apparently, he’s been so busy with other projects that he hasn’t even had time to read the latest version of the script.

“I mean, you know, to tell you the truth, somewhere on my iPad is an iteration of the whole Flash thing that I haven’t had time yet…I called them and said, ‘I have to be honest with you. I can’t look at anything right now. I’m so deep into this thing I’m doing,’” said Keaton. “Also, I’m prepping a thing I’m producing and getting ready to do down the road in the fall that I’ll be in, and I feel responsible to that. So, yeah, there is that. I’m not being cute or coy. If I talked about it, I’ll be just bulls***ting you. I don’t really know. I have to look at the last draft.”

Additionally, Keaton suggested that his involvement hinges on other factors as well. Namely, the U.K.’s ability to get a handle on the COVID-19 crisis.

“I keep my eye more on the Covid situation in the UK than anything,” added Keaton. “That will determine everything, and so that’s why I’m living outside the city here on 17 acres, staying away from everybody, because the Covid thing has got me really concerned. So, that’s my first thing about all projects. I look at it and go, is this thing going to kill me, literally? And you know, if it doesn’t, then we talk.”

The Flash hits theaters on November 4, 2022.
