James Gunn’s The Specials is Finally Getting a Blu-ray Release

14 years before James Gunn co-wrote and directed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, he made his superhero debut in The Specials. This independent comedy/superhero film was directed by Craig Mazin and written by Gunn, who also had a supporting role in the film. Now, after nearly two decades, La-La-Land Entertainment is giving The Specials its first-ever Blu-ray release.

Within the film, the Specials are third-rate superhero group who don’t get respect from their rivals, the general public, or even each other. Thomas Haden Church headlines the film as Ted Tilderbrook/The Strobe, the team’s inept leader. Paget Brewster also stars as The Strobe’s wife, Emily Tilderbrook/Ms. Indestructible. Emily’s affair with Tony/The Weevil (Rob Lowe) is one of several factors tearing the team apart.

Additionally, Jamie Kennedy appears as ex-villain turned hero, Amok; with Jordan Ladd as Nightbird, Judy Greer as Deadly Girl, and Kelly Coffield as Power Chick. James Gunn portrays Minute Man, The Strobe’s insecure brother who can shrink. Gunn’s real brother, Sean Gunn, also has a role as Alien Orphan.
