Sony Plans a New Spider-Man Spinoff Movie Featuring Jackpot

There’s another new Marvel movie in the works at Sony, with a semi-obscure heroine in the lead. Via Deadline, is bringing Jackpot to the big screen in her own solo movie. Additionally, Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim has been lined up to write the script. The Jackpot movie will presumably share continuity with Venom and Morbius.

Dan Slott and artist Phil Jimenez created Jackpot as an Amazing Spider-Man supporting character in 2007. Marvel initially teased fans with the possibility that Jackpot was Mary Jane Watson underneath her mask. However, her backstory is a bit more convoluted than that. The first Jackpot was actually Sara Ehret, a scientist who gained superpowers. After Sara gave birth to her daughter, she sold the Jackpot identity to another would-be-heroine named Alana Jobson.

Alana had no powers of her own, but she used the illegal Mutant Growth Hormone drug to give herself super strength and partial invulnerability. Tragically, Alana died fighting alongside Spider-Man shortly after assuming the identity.

Soon after Alana’s death, Spider-Man guilted Sara into reclaiming her mantle. Since then, Jackpot has rarely resurfaced in the comics.

Earlier this week, Sony also lined up S.J. Clarkson to direct a female-centric Marvel movie rumored to feature Madame Webb. Neither Webb nor Jackpot are comic book headliners, but Sony appears to be getting more aggressive with its Marvel movie slate. Since both heroines fall under the Spider-Man cinematic rights, Sony can utilize them in their cinematic universe.

Are you excited to see Jackpot get her own movie? And who would you cast in the title role? Let us know in the comment section below!
