Tom Holland Says Uncharted Won’t Be Like Other Video Game Adaptations

After a movie project suffers six directorial shakeups, most actors would probably cut their losses and move on. But perhaps it’s a testament to Tom Holland’s good nature that he remains attached to Sony’s Uncharted film. Holland signed on to play a younger version of Nathan Drake almost three years ago. The movie doesn’t seem any closer to starting production than it did back then. Regardless, Holland still has high hopes for what it could mean for video game adaptations.

Hollywood has a well-documented tendency to butcher live-action translation of popular video games (with a few exceptions). But according to Holland (via IGN), Uncharted has finally cracked the secret to breaking this trend.

“I think what Uncharted offers that most video games films don’t is that it’s an origin story to the games,” said Holland. “So if you played the games, you haven’t seen what’s going to happen in the film. And if you haven’t played the games, you’re going to enjoy the film because it’s information that everyone else is getting at the same time. But I’m super excited to make that movie and it’s been a long time coming.”

Holland isn’t the only one sticking with Sony on Uncharted. Mark Wahlberg is also still onboard to play Drake’s mentor, Sully, and Holland promises that he’s “going to kill it” in the film. Additionally, Holland had nothing but high praise for writer Joe Carnahan’s latest draft of the screenplay.

“I read the newest draft of the script on the way over here and it’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read,” Holland said. “It really, really jumps off the page.”
