Aquaman 2 Won’t Be James Wan’s Next Film

Director James Wan’s Aquaman cleared $1.1 billion worldwide and became one of DC’s biggest hits. Warner Bros. quickly lined up Wan to direct the sequel, with a scheduled release date of December 16, 2022. However, a recent interview with CinemaBlend indicates Wan will probably be directing another film before he dives back into the ocean. When asked about his next project during a press junket for Annabelle Comes Home, Wan offered a cryptic response.

“I think I kind of know,” said Wan. “It won’t be Aquaman 2 just yet. I have something else I’m cooking up. I’m not ready to share just yet.”

Wan has been working on a number of different projects. Along with the latest Annabelle, he also co-produced The Curse of La Llorona, which hit theaters earlier this year. Wan is also producing the Mortal Kombat reboot. Reports indicate that Mortal Kombat could finally begin production later this year.

Wan is also producing The Trench, a horror-themed spin-off from Aquaman. Producer Peter Safran noted that it could be released before the sequel, even though it currently doesn’t have a release date or a director.

“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie,” explained Safran. “Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
