Simon Kinberg Explains Dark Phoenix’s X-Men Cameo

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Dark Phoenix!

As teased shortly before its release, Dark Phoenix marked the live-action debut for Dazzler. The pop superstar/mutant heroine was portrayed by Halston Sage (The Orville) in a brief scene while the X-Men celebrated their safe return from space. Via CBR, director Simon Kinberg spoke about Dazzler’s long-awaited X-Men cameo.

“I’m a huge fan and I love Dazzler,” admitted Kinberg. “And also, if you remember the Dark Phoenix storyline, she’s obviously a part of the Dark Phoenix Saga as told in the original comic. So I wanted somewhere in there just to have an Easter egg of her, so I felt like it was the right story to do it with, and there was an appropriate scene for her to be singing in, so I brought her into the movie.”

Kinberg also noted that Sage had an additional scene that was cut from the movie. She would have appeared among the mutants who were hurt by Jean Grey’s first Phoenix flare up.

Alison Blaire/Dazzler made her debut in 1980 within the pages of Uncanny X-Men #130, during The Dark Phoenix Saga. Dazzler eventually headlined her own comic series before joining the X-Men in the late ’80s. She remained with the team until Uncanny X-Men #251, and appeared sporadically after that. She was subsequently featured in New ExcaliburX-Treme X-Men, and A-Force.

Dazzler was almost alluded to in X-Men: Apocalypse as well. During a deleted scene, one of Dazzler’s albums was shown while the young X-Men spent time at the mall.
