Bumblebee Writer Talks Birds of Prey and Batgirl Scripts

With Bumblebee earning rave reviews, Christina Hodson is starting to make a name for herself as a writer of emotionally nuanced action blockbusters. Aside from this month’s Transformers prequel, she has two DC Comics-based films in development at Warner Bros. Namely, she’s the scribe behind 2020’s Birds of Prey and the long-gestating Batgirl standalone feature. In an interview with ComicBookMovie.com, Hodson provided an update on both movies.

Hodson had nothing but praise for the major players attached to Birds of Prey, which starts filming next month. “Our cast is awesome,” she said. “Most of it has leaked, so you already know who’s playing who. I’m super excited about the cast, about the characters. And it’s really fun and different and honestly, I think aside from the fact that, obviously, the studio would like me to not say anything, I think it’s fun not to say anything yet because that means there’s going to be whole bunch of fun little surprises for fans and for new people to the DC universe to discover.”

News of Hodson’s involvement with Batgirl broke earlier this year after its original writer and director, Joss Whedon, left the project. When asked if she could see Bumblebee’s Hailee Steinfeld in the title role, she insisted that that decision was “above [her] paygrade.” While Hodson couldn’t reveal much about her script, she did say “I’m loving writing it…it’s a total joy to work on. I love the character. And everyday I’m finding new things to love and get excited about.”

Whedon’s Batgirl was rumored to draw influence from DC’s New 52 relaunch. However, details on Hodson’s interpretation remain scarce. One-time Batgirl Cassandra Cain is making an appearance in Birds of Prey, but she won’t be donning cape and cowl alongside Huntress and Black Canary. Only time will tell if her role in that film will eventually lead to her own spinoff.
