The Boys Season 5’s ending comprised several exciting developments and major deaths. The story of Billy Butcher and his crusade against Homelander, the strongest supe in the world, came to a fitting conclusion in the episode, but there was more than just this conclusive fight.
Here’s what happened at the end of The Boys Season 5.
Why did Hughie have to kill Billy Butcher in The Boys Season 5 ending?
The Boys Season 5 featured a lot of major developments, but it mainly focused on the White House raid by Billy Butcher and his team. They planned to use Kimiko’s newly developed powers to burn the Compound V from Homelander’s blood. This plan did work out with the help of Ryan, who, along with Butcher, could pin Homelander down long enough for Kimiko to blast him.
The result was a powerless Homelander who begged for mercy from a ruthless Butcher. The anti-hero ended up scalping Homelander with his crowbar, all the while this humiliation played out on live television.
But this was not the end of the story. Instead, while celebrating their victory, Hughie noticed something odd. After finding out that the Supe-killing virus was missing, Hughie realized what Butcher was planning to do.
Hughie followed Butcher to the Vought Tower, where Butcher planned to unleash the virus. Hughie told him that he could not let him do that, and the two engaged in a physical altercation. With Hughie clearly overpowered and Butcher about to press the trigger to release the virus, Hughie shot his longtime ally. Tragically, it seemed that Butcher was about to back out a second before Hughie fired the shot.
After the funeral of Butcher, all the remaining characters get a fair ending. Mother’s Milk gets married, Kimiko heads to France with her pet dog, and Stand Edgar returns to head Vought.
Hughie and Annie open up a business of their own, and when Hughie is offered a job at the Department of Supe Affairs by the President, he turns it down.
It is also revealed that Annie was pregnant and they were naming the kid, Robin, paying tribute to Hughie’s deceased girlfriend, who died in the first episode of the show, kickstarting the saga.
