Why does Michael Afton play an evil role in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 unlike the games?

Directed by Emma Tammi, Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) 2 features Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio, Elizabeth Lail, Freddy Carter, McKenna Grace, Teo Briones, and Matthew Lillard. It is a sequel to the 2023 movie, taking inspiration from the popular game franchise of the same name.

Fans of the game would’ve realized that FNAF 2 has portrayed Michael Afton as a separate character. While this does provide an interesting twist, it is very different from the source inspiration.

For context, Michael Afton and Mike Schmidt were the same person in the games that players control. Over time, through subsequent installments, players learn more about Michael’s past and his family’s dark secrets. Later in the series, Michael is on a mission to save his sister, who is trapped within an animatronic. During the fifth installment of the game, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location, the game drops hints that Michael isn’t proud of his father’s past, allowing him to be a protagonist.

However, the film has portrayed Michael Afton with a darker twist. In FNAF 2, Michael is revealed to be an antagonist who intends to carry on the evil legacy of his father, William Afton. He even traps a few teenagers in the Pizzeria, leading everyone to their deaths. This clearly showcases that the film is intending to completely diverge from the games.

One theory that helps explain this shift suggests a connection between Michael and Ennard. It suggests that Ennard, an animatronic, merges multiple characters and uses Michael’s body as a disguise.

Currently, this is just a theory that the movie hasn’t proven true yet. However, if the theory materializes, there may be more FNAF movies that fans can look forward to. While there is no news about a third movie, the success of the second one could be a positive sign.
