With Tron: Ares now playing in theaters, fans are wondering if there is a Tron 4 release date. As of writing, Tron: Ares has grossed $33.5 million domestically and $60.5 million worldwide against a reported budget of $180 million. The newly released sci-fi action adventure follows Ares, played by Jared Leto. Ares is a complex, super-intelligent program, transported from the digital world to the real world.
So what is the Tron 4 release date estimate? When can fans expect it? Here’s what we know.
What is the Tron 4 release date estimate?
Tron 4’s release date estimate could be sometime around 2028. The film’s development hinges on Tron: Ares’ box office performance.
As of writing, Tron: Ares has made $60.5 million worldwide ($33.5 million domestically and $27 million internationally). Since box office success is a crucial factor in the greenlighting of sequels, Tron: Ares would need to make 2.5 or 3 times its budget to become a success. As such, the film would need to make somewhere between $450-500 to break even.
If Tron: Ares becomes a success within the next few weeks, a sequel’s development would be fast-tracked, and it would come out by 2028. However, if it ends up becoming a failure, a sequel either becomes less likely or doesn’t happen.
However, Tron: Ares sets up a future installment via the ending and the post-credits scene. In the ending, Ares sends a postcard to Eve from Mexico, while looking at pictures of Tron: Legacy‘s Sam and Quorra. Thus, Ares will most likely cross paths with them in Tron 4.
Meanwhile, in the post-credits scene, Julian Dillinger enters the Grid. He finds an Identity Disc resembling the one used by his grandfather, Ed Dillinger, in 1982’s Tron. Upon touching it, he transforms into a being similar to the original film’s Sark, thus teasing his role as Tron 4’s possible main villain.
Tron 4 news and updates
In a recent interview with Collider, director Joachim Rønning said that Tron 4’s chances of happening all depended on fans. When asked about the series’ future, he said, “If we are lucky enough to be able to continue this story, if enough people go and watch this version and this next installment, we can answer those questions.”
Tron 4’s plot could follow up from Tron: Ares’ ending, finding Ares on a quest to meet Sam and Quorra. It could also see Julian get used to the Grid and its capabilities.
The Tron 4 cast could include Jared Leto and Evan Peters, as teased in Tron: Ares’ ending.
