As we head into September, the latest The Conjuring: Last Rites box office predictions have continued to climb. In early August, it was projected that this last chapter for the Warrens in The Conjuring franchise would earn somewhere close to $27-36 million in its domestic opening weekend, but this figure has almost doubled in a recent report. While the film may face some lingering competition from the breakout hit Weapons, it will be a week before the upcoming sequel to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) releases nationwide on September 5. Here’s why The Conjuring Last Rites, otherwise known as The Conjuring 4, is looking like a box office success right out of the gate.
What are the new box office projections for The Conjuring: Last Rites?
As of August 27, The Conjuring: Last Rites is expected to earn around $45 million to $50 million in its domestic start from September 5 to 7.
This prediction comes from the analytics site BoxOfficeTheory, which believes that while Weapons will overtake the top spot this weekend late in August, it will be easily replaced by The Conjuring: Last Rites by the following weekend. Its August 27 report does not include any projections for how much the supernatural horror film will make overall, but an August 22 report indicates that its domestic haul would be somewhere in the range of $72.5 million and $112 million. That said, this range is based on a much lower opening weekend prediction for the film, just $32-39 million, so the current range should be higher.
The latest report explains that the film’s tracking “has climbed in recent days to a potential $45-to-50 million domestic start (if not higher).” Earlier, the site pointed out that it was “living up to prior forecasts with exhibitor sample pre-sales registering in line, and ahead in some cases, of The Nun II and 28 Years Later.”
To put the new $45-50 million forecast for the film’s domestic opener into context, this would exceed the first Conjuring movie’s opener at $41 million as well as The Conjuring 2’s $40.4 million. It would also smash the relatively low $24 million opener for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. On top of that, this is above the $35-$40 million prediction made by Deadline on August 14, which shows the momentum that the movie has been gaining in the last few weeks.
One of the main reasons why the hype surrounding The Conjuring Last Rites has been building is due to the finale factor for the film, which has been pushed by early trailers and social media posts. The movie is expected to cap off the storyline started by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren back in 2013, so many fans want to know how their journey concludes.
The movie has been placed well in the schedule for September 2025 too, which is fairly wide open when it comes to horror films. By its release on September 5, Weapons will be in its fifth week, and the only competition the movie has during its debut week is Disney’s filmed version of Hamilton. The following weekend does have multiple threats, including Demon Slayer Infinity Castle, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, The Long Walk, and Toy Story 30th Anniversary, but these are all in different genres. It won’t be until the latter half of the month that another horror film, Him, could impede its performance at the box office.
Better yet, The Conjuring Last Rites has fairly broad appeal. As noted by Deadline, the film is scoring well with women overall and for men under 25. The Conjuring franchise is also well-known around the world, with the main three Conjuring films having a solid outing at the international box office. Overseas, The Conjuring 2 made $220 million and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It made $140 million, so it’s expected that this movie will make the same impact.
So far, various theaters have shown off two different popcorn buckets for The Conjuring Last Rites, both of which feature the film’s signature Annabelle doll.
