Many fans are wondering how much money KPop Demon Hunters has made at the box office in its two-day limited run in US theaters. Of course, we’re specifically talking about the special KPop Demon Hunters: A Sing-Along Event, which released across the US and Canada (and elsewhere) on August 23 and 24 in over a thousand locations. Fortunately for Netflix, the movie came out in a fairly uneventful weekend for movie releases, with its major competition being the horror film Weapons that has been in theaters for several weeks. Here’s whether KPop Demon Hunters has had a strong box office performance so far.
What are KPop Demon Hunters’s box office numbers in theaters?
The box office numbers for KPop Demon Hunters: A Sing-Along Event are estimated to be $18 million to $19 million across its two-day opener.
While Netflix has not officially announced the exact numbers for the film’s theatrical release (and it’s possible that the streaming service never will considering how tight-lipped it is), several outlets have given their estimates.
This includes Deadline, which cites sources that believe the film has earned roughly $19.2 million between $10.1 million on Saturday and $9.1 million on Sunday. On the other hand, Box Office Mojo says that this number is closer to $18 million across 1700 theaters, with it earning $9.6 million on Saturday and $8.4 million on Sunday. Either way, both of these estimates are well within the range of $16 million and $22 million that was originally projected by Box Office Theory, which took the buzz for the film into account.
Compared to other films, Weapons secured $15.6 million over the August 23-25 weekend, which is still impressive given that it’s already been out for several weeks. Over the same period, Freakier Friday earned $9.2 million and The Fantastic Four: First Steps grabbed another $5.9 million.
As AMC did not participate in the movie’s release, Regal and Cinemark reaped the rewards of the KPop Demon Hunters sing-along the most. Both chains earned 30% of the attendance each.
The sing-along version of the film has already dropped on Netflix, appearing on the platform on August 25 at midnight.
