Is Jurassic World Rebirth a Flop or Hit? Box Office vs. Budget

Movie buffs are wondering if Jurassic World Rebirth is a box office flop or a hit, especially considering its lofty budget. As a reminder, this fourth film in the Jurassic World franchise released nationwide on July 2, the same month that saw the debuts of other major summer blockbusters like Superman 2025 (July 11) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25). At first, details of the movie’s budget were somewhat obscured by Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, and its box office performance domestically and internationally remained unsettled. But new numbers throughout August have made it clear whether Jurassic World Rebirth has been a success.

Is Jurassic World Rebirth a box office success?

Jurassic World Rebirth is a clear box office success and has earned over $828 million worldwide, as of August 18, well exceeding its production budget of $225 million.

Delving into the numbers so far, per Box Office Mojo, the Gareth Edwards-directed film has amassed $332 million in domestic theaters and a surprising $496 million at the international box office. The $828 million figure puts Jurassic Worth Rebirth in fourth place for the highest-grossing films in 2025, just below A Minecraft Movie and the live-action Lilo & Stitch but above Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon.

Back when Jurassic World Rebirth was released, it was reported that its budget was around $180 million. But a piece from The Hollywood Reporter later asserted that the movie’s budget was actually around “$225 million before marketing.” Most high-profile productions need to earn roughly two and a half times its production budget at the box office to be profitable, after factoring in marketing and distribution costs, which in this instance would be around $560 million. If these numbers hold true, that means the movie has already earned over $250 million in profit so far (and its run in theaters is not over yet).

By comparison, Jurassic Park 2025 is also knocking the two superhero blockbusters out of the park, even when considering that the movie had a slight early start on the pair of them. At the time of writing, Superman 2025 has roughly earned $600 million and The Fantastic Four: First Steps has crossed the $460 million mark. This is despite the fact that Jurassic World Rebirth has had rather middling scores from critics and audiences, as noted by its 51% Tomatometer and 71% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. Superman and Fantastic Four have both achieved a critic score of over 80% and an impressive audience score of over 90% on the site.

Much of the difference in their box office results actually comes from China. Among the three films, Jurassic Rebirth World has grossed by far the most at over $78 million, whereas Superman 2025 has only garnered $8.9 million and Fantastic Four 2025 has only earned just past $5.5 million, as noted by The Numbers.

Superman director James Gunn previously responded in an interview with Rolling Stone that his film would not perform as well overseas due to “a certain amount of anti-American sentiment,” given that the superhero is seen as a symbol of American ideals. This suggests that Jurassic Rebirth World, which is about dinosaurs and thus thematically apolitical, doesn’t have the same barrier of entry. Supporting this theory, the family film A Minecraft Movie has earned $29.2 million in the country, while the live-action Lilo & Stitch has crossed the $25 million mark.

That said, Jurassic World Rebirth has not yet raked in as much as the movies in the original Jurassic World trilogy. The film was originally projected to gross about $78 million in its 3-day opener, per Box Office Theory, but it actually overperformed these numbers with an opener of about $92 million. Still, that’s quite a substantial dip compared to Jurassic World Dominion’s $145-million opener in 2022 and Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom’s $148-million opener in 2018. Both of these movies grossed a total of over $1 billion, a number which Rebirth may or may not reach by the end of its run. The saving grace, though, is that the film’s budget is far below Dominion’s, which cost upwards of $465 million to make.
