Hawkgirl is arguably one of the most interesting characters in James Gunn’s Superman, and Isabela Merced received high praise for her performance. A part of the Justice Gang, Hawkgirl had quite a big part to play in the narrative.
But there was also something very surprising about a particular scene featuring Hawk Girl, wherein she killed the President of Boravia, which few saw coming. So, let’s delve deep into why Hawkgirl kills the President in Superman.
Why does Hawkgirl kill President Vasil Ghurkos of Boravia in Superman?
After participating in a couple of battles with Superman, Hawkgirl and Green Lantern (played by Nathan Fillion) had decided not to get involved with Luthor and his secret dealings with Boravia. But they ended up participating anyway, with help from Rex Mason’s Metamorpho at Superman’s request.
Guy Gardner and Kendra Saunders tries to stop the Boravian army’s invasion and the ongoing genocide in Jarhanpur. Unlike the other heroes who fought off the army, Hawkgirl goes directly for the President, Vasil Ghurkos, who was technically responsible for the genocide. She flew out with him through the window, but Ghurkos did not believe that she would kill him. In a surprising twist, Hawkgirl throws Ghurkos, telling him that she’s not Superman.
This perhaps comes from a point of rage as Ghurkos appears to consider Hawkgirl too weak to actually kill. The comics describe her as one of the fiercest warriors in the Justice League. This makes it seem that Hawkgirl is the only one who could actually kill the President of Boravia.
Moreover, DC deciding to give Hawkgirl this moment is a great step in the universe building, as it shows that different heroes have different moral standings. Hawkgirl killing off the President in Superman also aligns with her comic counterpart. So, all in all, Hawkgirl killing the Boravian President makes perfect sense, and it also adds a certain depth to the superheroes of the DCU.
