How Did Lex Luthor Create a Pocket Universe in Superman?

James Gunn’s new Superman movie has opened to big numbers at the box office and has established some intriguing concepts in the new DCU, such as Superman’s new origin story and the use of Pocket Universes or Pocket Dimensions.

Throughout the movie, Pocket Universes played a significant role in the story. While borrowed from the DC comics, James Gunn altered the concept just enough to make the ones seen in the DCU unique.

How Superman’s Lex Luthor created a Pocket Universe

In the DCU, as depicted in Superman, Pocket Universes or Pocket Dimensions are spaces that exist outside the primary reality. These spaces also follow different physical laws and properties.

In the DCU, Lex Luthor is the creator of these Pocket Dimensions. He creates them by causing tiny “Big Bangs.” Luthor then uses this space to aid in his illegal activities. Moreover, this dimension is extremely useful for him in his fight against Superman.

Interestingly, Superman is not the first time that the DCU used the concept of Pocket Dimensions. This concept was also present in the first season of Peacemaker. John Cena’s character was shown taking tools from this dimension. The second season of the show, which will arrive soon on HBO Max, will also explore this concept in greater detail.

James Gunn’s Superman has established more details about this important concept, and in the final Ultraman fight, also highlighted the extent to which these dimensions can be dangerous.

In the last battle, Superman finds a way to knock Ultraman into the Black Hole inside the Pocket Dimension. This proves that the dimension can hold a being as powerful as Superman. It is likely that these dimensions will play a key role in the future of the DCU, and Peacemaker Season 2 will hopefully provide more clarity about these dimensions.

Superman is now playing in theaters.
