The finale of Apple TV+’s Murderbot revealed why the SecUnit had to leave the Preservation Alliance to forge its new path. After Dr. Mensah’s team successfully restored Murderbot’s memory, the construct bot left the Preservation Alliance behind to pursue an independent future.
Alexander Skarsgård’s protagonist now faces crucial decisions about shaping their destiny beyond the Alliance’s constraints. The ending sets up intriguing possibilities for the SecUnit’s next chapter.

Why does SecUnit leave Preservation Alliance in Murderbot’s Ending?
The Murderbot ending proved once again why SecUnit felt “humane” to viewers all along. In episode 10 (the finale) of Murderbot, the protagonist SecUnit’s memory gets erased. But Preservation Alliance’s determination and Gurathin’s tech expertise find a way to restore it.
Once Murderbot revives its memory, Mensah and her team tell the SecUnit that they are looking to make a new contract for the bot. That way, Murderbot does not have to perform as a “SecUnit” for PressAux anymore. It can just be another unit and coexist with all the other team members.
Albeit the Preservation Alliance’s resounding plan, Murderbot leaves their residence at night and ventures into the unknown. After starting its journey, viewers get to know why the SecUnit needed to get away from Mensah’s team.
In its effort to make itself “humane,” Murderbot can’t pursue a life that is based on everyone else’s wants. The construct bot says, “I don’t know what I want. But I know I don’t want anyone to tell me what I want.”
How did Preservation Alliance restore SecUnit?
Preservation Alliance’s Gurathin successfully restored Murderbot’s memory after tricking his old dealer, Landers, to let him into the system of Corporate Rim. While most of SecUnit’s files are encrypted, Gurathin remembered a significant detail of Murderbot’s memory that sets it apart from other similar bots.
While searching in Corporate Rim’s database, Gurathin checked for Murderbot’s favorite show, Sanctuary Moon, and found all the data that he needed. To transfer back Murderbot’s memory, he had to first download it into his brain.
Once he came back to the Preservation Alliance’s temporary residence, the memory was transferred using a cable and connecting him to the Secunit.
Gurathin and Murderbot did not have an amazing relationship at the beginning of the Apple TV+ show. However, the finale showed Gurathin’s newfound understanding. He recognized that Murderbot, like himself, was a victim of Corporate Rim’s exploitation. This revelation marked a turning point in their dynamic.
