Is [Spoiler] Really Dead in Squid Game Season 3?

Squid Game Season 3 is the final season of the famed series, concluding with a major plot overhaul. For those wondering about the final twist of the series — yes, Gi-hun is indeed dead in Squid Game Season 3, as he sacrificed his life for the greater good. He also became the last person to die on the island where all the massacres took place.

Did Seong Gi-hun really die in Squid Game Season 3’s ending?

Yes, Gi-hun is dead in Squid Game Season 3. He died a hero’s death after deciding to sacrifice himself to save Jun-hee’s baby, who was named Player 222 after Jun-hee’s death. As Gi-hun and the baby were the only players remaining, and only one of them could survive, Gi-hun chose to kill himself and save the child.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed that he had not originally planned Seong Gi-hun’s surprise death. However, he said this death adds considerable depth to the narrative and brings the story full circle.

Speaking about this, the creator told Netflix, “The message I wanted to communicate was that if we solely pursue our immediate self-interest, and refuse to self-restrain, sacrifice, or bear any costs — and if we don’t put our heads together — we have no future.” He added, “Gi-hun’s self-sacrifice to save the baby is the message we need to hear today. This character, who is thrust into the game, endures everything, and then jumps back in to end it, is the one who should deliver this message.”

This surprise ending concluded the narrative while giving a redemptive arc to Gi-hun’s character. It also ended the franchise on a high note, exceeding what most fans expected.
