The film soon revealed that the creators developed the Black Box AI as one of the first artificial intelligences. But as the intelligence gained sentience, it killed its human masters. But inside the black box, isolated from the outside world and technology, this AI evolved at its own pace, becoming more powerful and lethal than anyone could have imagined.

M3GAN called the AI the digital equivalent of God. If unleashed, the AI could allegedly wipe out all of humanity and modern society within days. Hence, AMELIA planned to access and unleash the AI. The Black Box AI seemingly had a similar reaction to humans as M3GAN did in the previous film, highlighting the primary theme of the franchise.

The humans who created the Black Box and M3GAN initially contained both, but M3GAN eventually learned about emotions and developed some form of empathy. Hence, the Black Box AI served as one of the primary elements of M3GAN 2.0. It remained crucial to the narrative till the conclusion.
