The Sandman Season 2, despite its strong critical reception, will be the last season of the show. Netflix has decided to end the series with the upcoming season. This decision comes amidst sexual assault allegations against author Neil Gaiman, on whose work the series is based. He also served as an executive producer on the show.
Here’s why The Sandman is ending with Season 2
Neil Gaiman’s works reportedly ran into uncertainty because of the sexual assault allegations made against the writer in July 2024. However, the decision to conclude The Sandman was in place before the second season started filming, according to Variety. Hence, the upcoming installment will conclude the story and wrap up all the plot lines introduced in the first season.
Showrunner Allan Heinberg said, “The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season.”
He added, “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
The Sandman Season 2 will release on Netflix in July 2025, but it has a unique release schedule. For Netflix, releasing shows split across a month is very rare, but the streaming platform is going for it in the upcoming season of The Sandman. The first six episodes of the show will premiere on July 3, 2025, followed by episodes 7 to 11 on July 24, 2025. Netflix will release a special episode on July 31, 2025.
