Squid Game has been a phenomenon since the time it premiered in 2021, and soon the Netflix series will return with its third and final chapter. Ever since it was announced that it would be the last installment, fans have been wondering why Squid Game is ending with Season 3 and why there won’t be a Season 4.
So, here’s everything to know about the concluding season of the popular South Korean series and what lies ahead for the franchise.
Why Squid Game Season 3 is the last and final one
The third season of Squid Game will be the last one. This is because creator Hwang Dong-hyuk believes that the protagonist Seong Gi-hun’s story concludes in this season.
While Dong-hyuk did indicate that the ending of the series may feel like there is room for more, he and the team have decided to conclude the series on a high note and not go any further with this story. Discussing this, he said, “After watching Season 3, some may think there’s room for a Season 4, while others may feel there’s no need for one.” (via The Korea Times)
Additionally, Dong-hyuk explained how Squid Game Season 3 serves as one final confrontation between Gi-hun and the Front Man. “If Seasons 2 and 3 form one continuous narrative, then Season 3 is the climax — a story that’s bound to hit hard. It will be a story of true confrontation.”
However, the director is still open to the possibilities of further spinoffs of the hit series, which would also appeal to fans. “I have considered the idea of a spin-off. There were moments during production when I grew curious myself,” said Dong-hyuk.
Moreover, Hwang Dong-hyuk also seems to have some ideas for a potential spinoff in the future. He told IndieWire at the Gotham Awards, “If I make [a] spin off, it will be a story happening between Season 1 and 2. There [was] a three years gap between Season 1 and 2,…So, I want to show what they did for those times.”
Fans can look forward to the third and final season of Squid Game premiering on June 27, 2025, on Netflix.
