Who Is Baby Joey in the New Superman 2025 Trailer?

The first image of Baby Joey has been revealed in the new Superman 2025 trailer announcing that tickets are now on sale for upcoming James Gunn-directed movie. In a quick shot in the middle of the trailer, Superman is seen from the back holding a green baby that has previously been identified as an infant named Joey based on various toys and books for the film. While the character is expected to play a very brief part in the movie, some fans believe that he will set much of the plot in motion. Here’s how Baby Joey might factor into the Superman movie, which releases nationwide on July 11, 2025.

Why Baby Joey is important in the Superman 2025 movie

In a children’s book called “Superman’s Friends and Foes,” a tie-in for the movie, Baby Joey was confirmed to be the toddler son of Metamorpho, otherwise known as Rex Mason. In the New Earth or Earth-0 universe, Joseph Mason (or Joey Mason) is the son of Rex and Sapphire Stagg.

Furthermore, the book reveals that Joey is taken somehow in the movie, forcing Metamorpho to “choose between working with Superman or Lex Luthor.”

The image of Superman grasping onto Baby Joey with his right hand on the trailer shows a lot of struggle. From the right side of the screen, it looks like Metamorpho, a superhero with the ability to transmute his body into pretty much any elemental compound at will, sends blue vine-like tendrils toward Superman while they seemingly float in a space filled with numerous cubes. One of these tendrils is wrapped around the superhero’s neck, but it doesn’t appear to be attacking him, instead ensuring that he’s locked in place while his son is being rescued.

It’s still unclear how Joey is taken in the film, though it’s speculated that Lex Luthor is the one responsible for kidnapping the baby. This would provide leverage against Metamorpho and ostensibly force him to create kryptonite or turn his body into kryptonite, which would make Superman’s capture much easier.

As we learn in the prequel book Superman Welcome to Metropolis, Luthor discovers that a new element he places within his cyborg creation, Metallo, weakens the Man of Steel. But considering how rare this substance is on Earth, he might need someone like Metamorpho to create more of it artificially. Hopefully, Superman comes to save Baby Joey in the movie sooner than later.
