It’s been almost six years since the last Star Wars movie was released, and fans are getting antsy to see the franchise back on the big screen. However, after multiple film delays and cancellations, things have been looking grim. Fortunately, Disney seems to have (somewhat) corrected course, and there are finally a few Star Wars movies with solid release dates.
Future Star Wars movie release dates
Eleven Star Wars movies have been announced to be in either planning or production. Some of these have almost certainly been canceled behind the scenes, but we’ve included all the films that haven’t officially been axed.
The current Star Wars movie release lineup is:
- The Mandaloraian and Grogu: May 22, 2026
- Star Wars: Starfighter: May 28, 2027
- Rogue Squadron: TBA
- Lando: TBA
- A Droid Story: TBA
- Untitled New Jedi Order Era Movie: TBA
- Untitled Dawn of the Jedi Era Movie: TBA
- Untitled New Republic Era Movie: TBA
- Untitled Taika Watiti Movie: TBA
- Untitled Simon Kinberg Trilogy: TBA
- Untitled Rian Johnson Trilogy: TBA
The Mandalorian and Grogu
Release Date: May 22, 2026
The Star Wars movie furthest along in development is The Mandalorian and Grogu. Dave Filoni will be directing, and this is tentatively set to continue (and possibly conclude) the journey that started in The Mandalorian.
Star Wars: Starfighter
Release Date: May 28, 2027
Shawn Levy will be directing Star Wars: Starfighter, which is set to take place around five or six years after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Ryan Gosling is set to star in the movie, and we’d be shocked if he wasn’t a starfighter pilot.
Rogue Squadron
Release Date: TBA (Looking grim)
The Patty Jenkins-directed Rogue Squadron was announced on December 10, 2020 and a release date of Christmas 2023 was set for the film. The only details given, other than the movie would center around the infamous Rogue Squadron, is that it would take place after The Rise of Skywalker. Production ended up being delayed, and Jenkins left the project for other work before returning in December 2022. At some point, the film was shelved, with Variety reporting it was no longer in development on March 7, 2023. However, on March 13, 2024, Jenkins told Collider that she had signed a new contract and would be the writer and director for Rogue Squadron.
However, Disney hasn’t given any updates about the movie since then. Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter sounds like a very similar concept that will take place during the same time period envisioned for Rogue Squadron, so it’s possible the film was canceled and the idea was recycled.
Lando
Release Date: TBA
Donald Glover is still working on a standalone Star Wars movie starring himself as Lando Calrissian. The project was first announced in December 2020 as a Disney Plus series, but development eventually shifted to Lando being a film. No solid news about the project has been released, but Glover did confirm it was still in development as of September 2024.
A Droid Story
Release Date: TBA (Probably never)
An animated film starring R2-D2 and C-3PO supporting a new character was announced on December 10, 2020. However, no news of the project has surfaced since 2021, so it’s likely dead in the water.
Untitled New Jedi Order Movie
Release Date: TBA
Daisy Ridley is returning to Star Wars in a film set 15 years after Rise of the Skywalker, which deals with the formation of the New Jedi Order. At one point, this was the next film slated to be released, but production issues have pushed it back.
Untitled Dawn of the Jedi Movie
Release Date: TBA
A movie set in the Dawn of the Jedi era will go way back before the formation of the Old Republic to tell the story of how the Jedi came to exist. The film is still in pre-production, and a release date hasn’t been confirmed.
Untitled New Republic Movie
Release Date: TBA
At some point after finishing The Mandalorian and Grogu, Dave Filoni will write and direct another film to close out that era of the franchise. The movie will be about a conflict between the New Republic and Imperial Remnants and give us some closure on plot threads that began on The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett.
Untitled Taika Waititi Movie
Release Date: TBA
A Star Wars movie to be written and directed by Taika Waititi was announced on May 4, 2020. Since then, very little information has been released about the project. Kathleen Kennedy recently told Screenrant that the film is still in development and that Tony McNamara was recently hired to write it. It’s unlikely we’ll hear much about this one for a while, if it even comes to fruition.
Untitled Simon Kinberg Star Wars Trilogy
Release Date: TBA
According to Deadline, Simon Kinberg will write and direct the next main Star Wars films. Episodes 10, 11, and 12 will start a new saga that will take the franchise into the future. No other details are known other than the story will be separate from any other works currently in development.
Untitled Rian Johnson Star Wars Trilogy
Release Date: TBA (Probably never)
A new Star Wars trilogy by Rian Johnson was announced on November 9, 2017. This project is almost certainly canceled, but neither Johnson nor Disney have confirmed it.
