Marvel’s New Squirrel Girl Scripted Podcast Series Launches Today
It’s been almost three years since Doreen Green starred in her own comic book as The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. But thankfully, her story isn’t over yet. Marvel (via Variety) has announced that Doreen will headline its next scripted podcast series, Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show. The new series comes from original Squirrel Girl writer Ryan North.
The Unbeatable Radio Show will pick up where North’s series left off in 2019. After her secret identity is exposed, Doreen begins hosting a radio show to dole out advice to her fellow students at Empire State University. But when an anonymous caller begins terrorizing New York, Doreen will be forced to do a lot more than just answer the phone. Luckily, other heroes like Spider-Man and Iron Man are able to lend her a hand.
Milana Vayntrub is providing the voice of Doreen after previously lending her talents to the animated Marvel Rising franchise. Vayntrub was also going to play Squirrel Girl in a live-action New Warriors TV show set up at Freeform. Unfortunately, the show never made it past the pilot stage. In addition, the podcast will feature Squirrel Girl staples like Nancy Whitehead (Crystal Lucas Perry) and Tippy Toe (Erica Schroeder), who help Doreen produce her radio program. The voice cast also includes Leo Sheng (Koi Boi), Davied Morales (Chipmunk Hunk), Tina Benko (Rachel Oskar), and Peter Hermann (Brain Drain).
“Doreen has an optimism that’s not based in naiveté,” said Vayntrub in a new statement. “Her optimism is grounded in fairness and trust and justice. I think she — like me and in a way, she’s more of who I want to be like — really believes there is good in all people and that justice is not punishment, but justice is restorative and it’s about people taking accountability and it’s becoming better versions of themselves. People do harm because they are lacking in resources or in love in some way. And she is hilarious because of her honesty and her bluntness and her ability to see the best in people. It’s more of who I want to be like, and I feel like, after a few hours of playing her, I like channel her and then can bring that into my life.”
Giovanna Sardelli directed all six episodes of the podcast, which also features original music by Justin Huertas and Steven Tran. Fans can also check out a digital-exclusive one-shot written by North that acts as a prequel to the new series. The issue is currently available to read on Marvel Unlimited.
The first episode of Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show launches today wherever you get your podcasts. All remaining episodes will be exclusively available on the SXM App and Marvel Podcasts Unlimited for one week before heading to other platforms.
