Werner Herzog Discusses Directing The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda

Werner Herzog has a new documentary playing at the Toronto Film Festival. Fireball: Visitors From Darker Worlds deals with meteors and human reactions to them. But of course, he’s much more associated with a very different celestial body. The Child, a.k.a. Baby Yoda, was the bounty he sought on The Mandalorian. And the interviewers at Toronto, via Variety, would not let him get away without asking about his scenes opposite that super space baby.

Herzog’s role in The Mandalorian was strictly as an actor, but as the one closest to the Child, he did get to offer some direction. As he explained, “Since I was only 20 inches away from it with my face, I could read what the response of the creature — which is of course all mechanical and artificial, but it was operated by human beings — and it was more that I directed, or tried to, the humans, who couldn’t see exactly what I saw. And I said, ‘here’s the light. Our torch light is going right in its eyes. It should close its eyes,’ and, of course, bang — they closed the eyes.”

It sounds a lot better in his distinctive English-tinged German accent. Check it out in the video below for the full effect.

The Mandalorian season 2 starts on Disney+ Oct. 30th. Herzog’s character will sadly not return, but Baby Yoda certainly will. And he’ll be blinking more often when he does.
