New Moon Fails to Beat Dark Knight’s Opening Weekend

Despite setting new records for a midnight opening with $26.27 million at 3,514 theaters and single day opening with $72.7 million from 4,024 theaters, Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon ended up with $140.7 million domestically for the three-day weekend.

That means it’s the third-biggest opening domestically, trailing the opening weekend record of The Dark Knight‘s $158 million and also is behind Spider-Man 3‘s $151.1 million.

Having said that, “New Moon” did open worldwide to $258.8 million, which, in terms of superhero movies, was only beat by Spider-Man 3‘s $381.7 million. The top worldwide opening of $394 million was set by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last July. Spider-Man 3 ranks second on that list and “New Moon” came in at #7.
