X-Men Fans May Not Be Ready For What’s Coming Next For Their Favorite Mutants

Marvel Comics is taking the X-Men into a much darker setting. Midnight X-Men is an upcoming comic series by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Matteo Della Fonte. It’s a part of Marvel’s new Midnight Universe, which reimagines popular characters through a horror-driven lens. The comic series is scheduled to debut with its first issue on October 7, 2026.

According to Bleeding Cool, Midnight X-Men will follow the mutants after a major failure. The story will unfold out of sequence, revealing what happened through flashbacks and different periods in the comic’s history. The series will focus on failure, survival, and the consequences of decisions that changed the team forever.

Instead of showing events in chronological order, Midnight X-Men’s story will move between the past and present. This will allow readers to learn what caused the team’s downfall. The comic will reportedly feature flashbacks to explore an earlier period in the mutants’ history. This version of the team includes the original five mutants, as well as Kitty Pryde and Colossus. Their story will eventually lead to the events that shape the darker present-day setting.

The series will also introduce a dangerous conflict between vampires and mutant Empyres. New York City becomes a key battleground as tensions between the two groups continue to grow. The X-Men will have to navigate this threat while dealing with the fallout from their previous failure.

The Midnight Universe allows Marvel to approach its established characters without being restricted by their traditional stories. The horror setting also allows Hickman to explore themes of loss, fear, and failure in ways that would be difficult in a conventional story.

For longtime readers who are familiar with Hickman’s previous work on the mutants, Midnight X-Men could be an especially unexpected return. Instead of building a new mutant society, the series will explore what happens when the mutants fail and face the consequences.

With its non-linear structure, horror elements, and alternate take on the mutants, Midnight X-Men could show fans a side of the mutants they have never seen before.
