The past few years have seen Godzilla do battle with the superheroes of both Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Despite their might, none of them managed to kill the seemingly immortal King of the Monsters. However, in 2026, someone will finally accomplish that feat. Moreover, this epic battle will be commemorated with an homage cover based on The Death of Superman.

The battle will take place in Godzilla #6 by Tim Seeley and Nikola Čižmešija. The homage cover, which may be viewed below, will be drawn by the original The Death of Superman artist and inker team of Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding. The colors will be provided by Gregg Whitmore.
“When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility of a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover that would play off the iconic cover that Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it,” remarked Jurgens. ”I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was great fun to be able to contribute!”

Why is Godzilla dying in the comics?
While IDW is being open about Godzilla’s impending death, the details are being kept secret. However, Godzilla Product Development Manager Aaron John Gregory says the story will be respectful to the legacy of the King of all Monsters. Indeed, he says fans “may need a kaiju-sized Kleenex.”
“These types of comic events cannot be handled lightly,” Gregory affirmed, while comparing the upcoming event to reading the Death of Superman. “I was blown away by the consequential brutality in those pages,” Gregory recalled. “I can tell you that the incredible team behind our new Kai-Sei era of Godzilla have delivered on that level.” Gregory also noted the trust that TOHO International had shown in IDW’s treatment of Godzilla thus far.
Godzilla #6 arrives in comic shops everywhere on January 7, 2026.
